FUEL IN GREECE
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian Seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Not only is Greece rich in history, but it has the longest coastline on the Mediterranean Basin and the 11th longest coastline in the world. It is for these reasons that Greece is a global icon in the maritime industry.
The Greek-owned ocean-going fleet consists of 3,428 ships and is constantly growing. With nearly 6,000 islands, transportation in Greece relies heavily on boats and ocean-going vessels. A plethora of destinations in Greece can only be reached by ferry from The Port of Piraeus. The Port of Piraeus, located in Athens, is the largest port in Greece and one of the largest in Europe. It has served as the port of Athens since ancient times and assists more than 59 million domestic and foreign passengers a year.
Shipping remains one of the country's most important industries, accounting for 4.5 percent of GDP and employing more than 150,000 people. In addition, the Greek Merchant Navy is the largest in the world with over 3,150 ships. Greece has a significant shipbuilding and ship maintenance industry and the six shipyards around the Port of Piraeus are among the largest in Europe. In recent years, Greece has also become a leader in the construction and maintenance of luxury yachts.
